DMX was hospitalized Friday night after suffering a heart attack that was triggered by an apparent drug overdoes.

After overdosing at his home around 11 p.m., DMX was rushed to a hospital in White Plains, New York. He is currently in the critical care unit. A source close to the family tells TMZ that the 50-year-old rapper has “some brain activity.” Another source says he’s in a “vegetative state” and doctors have cautioned he may not make it.

DMX has battled substance abuse for years, last checking into a rehab facility in October 2019, less than nine months after he was released from prison on tax evasion charges.

DMX Off Life Support and Breathing on His Own, Lawyer Says

The Verzuz series is coming to Apple Music and Beats 1 with a face-off between Snoop Dogg and DMX scheduled for Wednesday, July 22 at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET.

The series, founded by hitmakers Swizz Beatz and Timbaland found its audience on Instagram Live — and will continue to live there — and is now also available on-demand via Apple.

The Verzuz series has grown from a novel event bringing together producer peers to an online phenomenon during the pandemic. The format calls for 20 rounds with each artist playing a hit and a rebuttal. Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu and John Legend are just a few artists who have faced off in this virtual competition, recording over a half-million viewers tuned in.

Back in March, the show’s first battle was between the now-hosts, Swizz and Timbaland.

“I loaded up my beat machine and called him out too,” Swizz told Variety earlier this year. “We went live, playing our best. The audience went wild in real-time, talking to us, responding to the tracks. Two hours after Tim called me out, Verzuz pretty much started.”

Artists on the show have seen streaming figures grow by up to 300%. With its partnership with Apple Music, the possibilities of Verzuz are endless.

“DMX wants to battle Jay-Z, but he’s going to sound better against Eminem,” Swizz said. “People want Usher and Chris Brown, but, that’s a big brother/little brother thing: What I’d like to see is Usher going up against Justin Timberlake, and Chris Brown vs. Justin Bieber. That makes sense to me.”

Timbaland agreed: “The dynamics of sound and personality have to be there: Sometimes they’re similar, sometimes they’re in opposition. You want something that works sonically and is entertaining.”

DMX and Snoop were contemporaries who saw success throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s.

DMX claims his mentor tricked him into smoking crack as a teen

Rapper DMX says his problems with addiction began when he was tricked into smoking crack at 14 — by his mentor.

“I was in Yonkers. This guy, ‘Ready Ron,’ he was like an older brother to me,” DMX told fellow hip-hop star Talib Kweli on his “People’s Party” podcast.

“He would rap, and I would do the beatbox,” DMX said. “I loved this guy like an older brother.”

One night after the duo “did a robbery one night… it was his birthday and we came back and split the money. I said, ‘Here you go, go get something nice for your birthday.’ So he came back with a blunt rolled up, and I’m counting the money, he pass[ed] the blunt.”

DMX, who subsequently battled substance-abuse issues for years, held back tears as he further related, “I hit the blunt and … I was no longer focused on the money. I’ve never felt like this, it just f–ked me up. I later found out that he laced the blunt with crack. Why would you do that to a child? He knew I looked up to him. Why would you do that to somebody who looks up to you? A monster was born. I wouldn’t do that to my worst enemy. Especially to someone that you supposedly love.”

He learned on that fateful night, “The person that I loved was a snake.”
